Library strike could start Wednesday

The libraries in our area are preparing for a strike. Shortly after BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), which represents the librarians, issued a 72-hour strike notice last Wednesday, the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) made a new offer to its librarians. This was rejected and the union responded with a counteroffer.

Their collective agreement with the VIRL expired 15 months ago.

BCGEU President Stephanie Smith said, “Unless the employer comes back with a serious offer, pickets will be up at VIRL branches starting Wednesday, March 9.”

Webinar series addresses employment challenges of remote communities

The North Island Employment Foundation Society’s, or “NIEFS” out of Campbell River has recently begun is Virtual Webinar Series, Money Matters, for Cortes Island. Last week it delivered the webinar “Managing on an Irregular or unsteady Income,” covering tips for those living on seasonal or contract incomes, whose incomes vary from month to month, or season to season.

Vancouver Island Regional Library served strike notice

Picket lines could go up in front of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) branches as early as 8 AM Thursday.   

The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) served the Vancouver Island Regional Library board with 72-hour strike notice on Monday.

How can CKTZ best support its listeners during an emergency?

Cortes Radio is conducting an emergency communications survey, which you will find on their website.

“We’re trying to find out what the community wants in terms of emergency communication, and what CKTZ can provide. I think that it’s a really important project, so I hope that people will take the 30 seconds that it takes to fill out a survey and consider honestly what it is that they feel our community radio can offer them in a emergency event,” said CLIO FM, who’s in charge of this project.

Whiskey Point application to add a 90 seat meeting room sent back to SRD Board

The Whiskey Point Resort overlooks the ferry terminal at Quathiaski Cove, on Quadra Island. It’s driveway comes off a road that is often choked with Quadra and Cortes Island residents, as well as tourists, waiting to board the ferry. Never-the-less plans to add a 90 seat meeting room appeared to be moving forward, before it was brought before the Electoral Areas Services Committee (EASC) last June
