Almost a month after they filed their petition in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the havoc left fourteen Cortes residents   continues to spread. On Thursday, January 24, 2019, the Strathcona Regional District Board took a vote which, in the short term, largely left Cortes island sidelined.

Petition To Remove Noba Anderson

As a recent post to the Tideline suggests, “there seems to be an undercurrent of spite, allegation, sabotage and just plain nastiness” following the recent election. A very small group of Regional Director Noba Anderson’s opponents do not appear to have accepted the results. On  Jan. 7, 2019, the Campbell River Mirror published a story stating that fourteen Cortes Island residents filed a petition to remove Noba Anderson from office, in the Supreme Court of British Columbia

Why Re-elect George Sirk As Regional Director?

In my second interview with the candidates for Cortes Island’s Regional Director, I became aware that they have a very different vision of how the island should be governed. The current Director, Noba Anderson, portrays herself as an instigator, who “convenes conversations that would not otherwise happen.” Many of the island’s best known projects came about through her direct intervention. Though George Sirk chalked up a similar list of accomplishments during the nine years he represented the island (1996 – 2005), he stresses the idea that there should be more of a separation between the Regional Director and specific business projects. Cortes Islanders will choose their next regional Director on October 20, 2018. There is a sense in which both candidates are seeking re-election. George Sirk was our representative from 1996 until 2005. Our current director, Noba Anderson, has been in office since 2008. CKTZ Signs MOU With Strathcona Regional District

Cortes Island, August 29, 2017 – Cortes Community Radio CKTZ signs MOU with Strathcona Regional District, stating its willingness to provide temporary usage of the station during  emergencies.

“This memorandum of understanding is a significant milestone in our relationship with the Strathcona Regional District (SRD), and is fully aligned with the purposes laid down by Cortes Community Radio’s founders. Article 2.g of our constitution  states that one of the station’s purposes is “to establish an ongoing community radio station that can broadcast important information to the community in cooperation with emergency services,” said Roy L Hales, President of Cortes Community Radio.
