B.C. First Nations Announce Plans To Make Olympic Bid For 2030 Winter Games

(ANNews) – Four B.C. First Nations have announced their plans to make the first ever Indigenous-led bid for the Olympic Games.

The First Nations of Lil’wat, Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the mayors of Vancouver and Whistler to explore the possibility of bringing the games to the coast.

Update From Fairy Creek: interview with Kathleen Code

[Kathleen Code is is a spokesperson for the Rainforest Flying Squad and other land defenders attempting to protect old growth areas at Fairy Creek. She founded the legal team, and is also a member of their media team. Since joining the effort in August, 2020, she’s worked closely with elder Bill Jones to understand the situation of the Pacheedaht First Nation, in particular their interactions with industrial forest company Teal Jones and the NDP government. I interviewed Kathy on December 3rd 2021, asking her for an update to round out the “Cortes At Fairy Creek” story. This is a lightly edited transcript of that interview.]

Proposed Cortes Island Cell tower on Tla’amin First Nation land

How our local government works

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has no authority over TELUS’ proposed 63.1 metre high cell tower site in Mansons Landing. 

This would not be true if TELUS was building on its property at  798 Rexford Road, but they want to build on the former Paukeanum Indian Reserve No. 3. It has been Tla’amin First Nation land ever since the Tla’amin Final Agreement with the governments of BC and went into effect on April 5, 2016.

From ‘street kid’ to public rep for the Law Society of BC tribunal

Jereme Brooks says he’s feeling fortunate to have a voice in the B.C. Law Society tribunal’s process as the first syilx person to serve as a public representative.

He was invited to accept the position in October, after being interviewed by a panel of jurors. He’ll be responsible for sitting alongside lawyers on a panel, hearing allegations against lawyers and helping to decide on appropriate disciplinary measures.

Just days after tabling a private members bill that would make decent affordable housing a right for all Canadians, NDP MPs continued to pressure the federal government to address the national housing crisis. They spoke in particular about the horrific state of affairs in Indigenous communities.
