Hope for the future of the tiskʷat mill site

The tiskʷat Mill has been a cornerstone of Powell River’s prosperity for more than a century. While it no longer has a future producing newsprint, up until two weeks ago it seemed like the site was on the verge of being reborn as a hydrogen company. Then Paper Excellence refused Renewable Hydrogen Canada’s offer and listed their property with an International Real Estate firm.

Ferry traffic getting back to pre-COVID levels

BC Ferry traffic on both the Cortes and Campbell River ferries were almost back to pre-COVID levels in 2021. 

20,000 more vehicles sailed from Campbell River than the previous year and  there were almost 4,600 more from Cortes Island.

Trudeau missed his chance to meet with the truckers

Editor’s note: the following opinion post was originally meant to be a response to the article ‘Stark poll results ‘speak for themselves’: Political scientist Survey says Canadians fear for country’s future,‘ but speaks to a larger audience.

There is a natural range of opinion among the members of our society which should be recognized and accepted. That is reality.

Prime Minister Trudeau squandered the opportunity to address the range of concerns within the Truckers Convoy by choosing to not meet with a small, representative group  early during the demonstration. He could have calmly explained the need for the restraints in order to avoid overwhelming our nationwide Health Care system and said that as soon as the indicators of admissions to emergency services and ICU’s diminished to a certain point that satisfied the provincial health care advisors, the restraints would be lifted in line with their advice.

BC Outlines Plan to Begin Lifting COVID-19 Restrictions

British Columbia’s indoor mask mandate and vaccine card will remain in place as the province begins to ease pandemic public health orders on  Thursday and transition to a strategy focused on personal risk  management.

The Omicron variant, which  took hold amid loosened public health measures and drove the province’s  fifth wave of COVID-19, is waning enough to look at a less “restrictive”  means of pandemic management, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie  Henry said Tuesday.
