International science expedition sets out to investigate secrets of Pacific salmon

A multinational scientific expedition is set to launch to solve the mystery of what happens when salmon head into the Pacific Ocean and how climate change is impacting both the iconic fish and their marine environment. 

Four vessels and more than 60 international scientists from Canada, Japan, the U.S., Russia and Korea are taking part in one of the largest-ever surveys of salmon in the North Pacific from February to March, said Brian Riddell, science adviser for the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

B.C. First Nations Announce Plans To Make Olympic Bid For 2030 Winter Games

(ANNews) – Four B.C. First Nations have announced their plans to make the first ever Indigenous-led bid for the Olympic Games.

The First Nations of Lil’wat, Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the mayors of Vancouver and Whistler to explore the possibility of bringing the games to the coast.

Parliamentary Budget Officer says fossil fuel tax breaks costing Canada $billions

report published this week by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) finds Ottawa’s tax breaks to the fossil fuel sector are leaving nearly $2 billion on the table each year in lost revenue.

The report comes at the request of Sen. Rosa Galvez, who asked the PBO to estimate the cost of deductions related to fossil fuel development. Specifically, it found that from 2015 to 2019, tax deductions related to fossil fuel exploration, development, property expenses and other measures averaged $1.8 billion annually. The low year was 2016 with approximately $1.3 billion worth of tax deducted, but since then, the amount has escalated to nearly $2.4 billion in 2019, the most recent figures available using T2 corporate tax data.

Preventing biodiversity collapse critical to COP26 climate goals, say world leaders

In the run-up to the UN’s crucial climate conference at month’s end, global leaders have laid the foundation for an international framework to protect nature and halt the collapse of biodiversity worldwide while also curbing global warming and protecting human health.

More than 100 nations committed to the Kunming Declaration on Wednesday, a promise to put the natural world on a path to recovery by 2030.
