Another Awesome Christmas Dinner Take-out on Cortes Island

Team Awesome served more than 200 people at this year’s free Christmas Dinner Take-out on Cortes Island. That’s 50% less than last year. Given  the sub zero temperatures and slippery snow covered roads, the organizers were surprised that so many showed up. 

In the thank-you, which Noah Davison and Izabelle Perry posted in the Tideline, it says “We were so touched by all the neighbours and friends that helped each other pick up and deliver meals. It was such a heartwarming and joyful sight to see!”

The Christmas day take-out was primarily financed by Whaletown Community Club, through a BC Community Gaming Grant, but the special touches are only possible because of donations of time, food and money from members of the community.

Next phase of fiber optics begins on Cortes this week

CKTZ News, through an LJI grant from Canada-info.ca

Installation crews will be working on Cortes Island to lay fiber optic internet cable along roads and to individual homes starting Jan. 7. Households that had applied for the free installation will be contacted two days prior to their turn.

Hummingbirds have humans eating out of their hands during cold snap

This morning, my 79-year-old dad was out in the winter dark shovelling a path through a half foot of fresh snow to ensure his hummingbird feeders were full of fresh, sugary liquid by dawn’s first light.

And it wasn’t the first time.

He’s one of a legion of residents across southwestern B.C. and Vancouver Island on a crusade to ensure resident Anna’s hummingbirds don’t perish in the unusually cold weather gripping the region the past few weeks.

The Nzuri Basket Company is a good thing

The first shipment of baskets, for what was to become the Nzuri Basket company, arrived on Cortes Island in August, 2020. 

Jenny Hartwick didn’t set out to found a company. The baskets she initially brought home, from a trip to Kenya, were gifts for friends and family. 

“It wasn’t until we were back in Canada and I’d given away all of my baskets. Everybody was saying to me, ‘Wow, these are amazing can you get more of them?’ I thought, ‘Gee,  maybe I can look into that’ and so that’s kind of, that was the start of where it came from,” explained Hartwick.

In the third instalment of Cortes Currents Reel Youth series, Mark Vonesh and Erica Køhn talk about Youth and Seniors programs. 

“Our youth and senior film programs, or youth and elder film programs, are probably about 30% – 40% of the work we do. It’s one of the most powerful projects that we’ve done,” said Vonesch.
