Mid August 2025 Housing Update from Rainbow Ridge

Mark Lombard from the Cortes Housing Society recently gave an update on progress at the Rainbow Ridge Affordable Housing Project.

“At this point we’re well along the way of building a community building with an office for the housing society. It’ll have:

  • a utility space that has controls for the water systems and filtration to send water to all the homes.
  • the controls for the battery and solar system that will provide backup power for the water and sewer for the buildings.
  • a laundry room that’ll serve the women’s shelter and other people on the south end who need it.
  • a guest bedroom that people who live in the seniors village or at Rainbow Ridge will be able to rent for a modest price per night.
  • a lounge area with a kitchenette that people can have a little birthday dinner or a card game, or if the Housing Society board wants to meet, there’ll be a big table that can be used for that.”

“We’re putting the siding on right now, and working on the interior finishing.”

Who gets first dibs on water? BC Greens say farmers

Editor’s Note: Basil Creek dried up to a trickle and some of the shallow wells on Cortes Island stopped recharging during the 2022 and 2023 droughts. There have been similar reports from Quadra Island, where the ICAN Water Security Team and Wei Wai Kum are studying the situation. So far, these appear to be shallow aquifer issues and the deep aquifers on both islands appear to be healthy. The ICAN Team could have been speaking for both teams when it wrote, the ‘aquifers appear to be sufficient for current levels of human use, BUT we may be drawing down our aquifers.’ The level of uncertainty is higher on Cortes, where we not yet been able to raise the funding for the necessary water studies.

The BC Green Party is calling for changes in the way the province deals with drought to ensure both farmers and the environment have access to enough water to flourish as climate change advances.

Arzeena Hamir, the Green candidate for Courtenay-Comox, said the party aims to make it easier and cheaper for farmers to build dugouts on farms that capture and store rainwater, seek amnesty for farmers facing large fines for unlicensed water use, and ensure water for farming food and protecting nature takes precedence over clear-cut logging in watersheds, commercial bottling needs, or to frack for gas during droughts.

Sechelt Council backs water conservation for new development

Editors note: In response to recurring water issues, a 36 unit development to the south of our broadcast area adopts conservation measures.

Sechelt council adopted the rezoning of Lot 5 Tower Road (Silver Valley Homes) and endorsed water conservation measures, to be built into the development permit stage at its Dec 6 meeting.

The development proposes 36 units of a mix of single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes with variation from studios to three-bedroom units.

Recognizing that committing to new developments means committing the Coast’s increasingly scarce water reserves, the conservation measures will be added to the development permit conditions, and would be secured by a covenant when the development permit is approved, Ian Holl, development planning manager explained.
