Local farmer works to provide local crops despite challenging climate in recent years

Sara Stewart, a local produce farmer on Cortes Island, has been running her market garden called Wildflower Produce for years, but recently, with unpredictable weather patterns, she says she could be in for a difficult year.

“During last year’s heat wave, the cherries literally cooked on the tree,” Stewart said.

Mark Vonesch 2: Supporting Cortes Island farmers

In the second of a series of programs about his running for Regional Director of Cortes Island, Mark Vonesch talks about growing up on a farm and what his rural background could mean when it comes to representing Cortes on the Strathcona Regional District Board.  

His family operated a dairy farm, with 50 cows, outside Olds, Alberta. Mark is the oldest of six children, which he jokes may have been a strategic move by his parents to have more help on the farm!

Blue Jay Lake Farm welcomes newcomers to rural life and helps address local housing shortage

Blue Jay Lake Farm has been welcoming newcomers to Cortes Island for more than 30 years. The farm seeks workers through the international Worldwide Opportunities On Organic Farms (WWOOF) program, previously known as “Willing Workers On Organic Farms.” Up to 25 “Woofers” per year spend time on the farm.

Cortes Island farm finds new ways to get goods to market

For more than 40 years, Cortes Islanders have been relying on Linnaea Farm for organic, seasonal produce, along with beef, lamb and chickens. The 316 acre charitable land trust is overseen by the Linnaea Farm Society and includes a group of stewards who live on the property.
