The federal NDP plans to rebuild by reclaiming political ground on the left, interim party leader Don Davies said in an interview with Canada’s National Observer.
The NDP is positioning itself as a progressive alternative to the Liberals, who have shifted to the right under Prime Minister Mark Carney, Davies said at a post-election town hall in Courtenay, BC on Sept. 10.

As the dust settles from the 2025 federal election, the Liberals have retained a minority government – but amid a growing Conservative presence in Ottawa and a devasted NDP party.
Under the new leadership of Mark Carney, the April 28 vote has resulted in the Liberals earning a projected 169 seats in the House of Commons – just three shy of the representation needed to for a majority. This is more than the 153 the Liberals previously held in the last Parliament, but Conservatives saw their representation grow more markedly, increasing from the 120 seats at the last sitting of the House to a projected 144. Meanwhile the Bloc Quebecois kept 22 seats – losing 11 from the last Parliament – and the New Democrats saw their representation fall from 25 to just seven. The Green Party’s representation fell from two to one.

Provincial and municipal politicians in the North Island-Powell River riding are joining the fray about whether embattled Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn should stay in the running for the federal seat.
Last week, First Nations located across the riding took Gunn to task for his long collection of social media posts that argue the treatment of Indigenous people in residential schools does not amount to genocide.
They demanded federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre remove him as a candidate, arguing Gunn has “absolutely no authority” to determine what constitutes genocide when it comes to Indigenous people’s experiences of residential schools.

I’d like to clear up what has been said today.
I have always been firm in recognizing the truly horrific events that transpired in residential schools, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is simply false. I have never wavered in condemning these institutions of abuse, where countless First Nations suffered at the hands of a patronizing federal government.

The seven most recent polls show Mark Carney’s Liberals ahead in what has largely become a two party election. Both 338Canada and CBC Poll Tracker project a Liberal majority, if the election were held today.
“The Liberals are continuing to climb in the polls and are widening their lead over the Conservatives, putting them deeper into majority territory. The Conservatives are holding their vote but it is the steep slide for the New Democrats, who have dropped into the single-digits in popular support, that is contributing to the rise in the Liberals’ numbers,” wrote Éric Grenier on the Poll Tracker website.
“Not only do polls continue to show momentum for the incumbent Liberals, but new data shows Mark Carney now leads Poilievre in several other metrics—suggesting the LPC may not have reached its ceiling just yet,” stated Phillipe J Fournier of 338Canada.
