The proposed budget for 2022 was one of the principle topics at the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 9th. Part of this process involved looking into the finances for 2021. So in the first of a five part series arising from that meeting, Cortes Currents is looking into how the SRD is spending the portion of our tax dollars under their control.

Boat catches fire close to Refuge Cove

At 9:08 AM on the morning of February 9th, 2022, a Squirrel Cove resident phoned the Coast Guard about a fire just north of Refuge Cove, on West Redonda Island. What she thought might be a house engulfed by fire turned out to be a 34 foot wood and fiberglass boat close to the shore.

Connectivity gap closing for B.C.’s isolated coastal communities

It’s a landmark moment for an ambitious project to bring rapid internet to a swath of remote communities along the B.C. coast.  

The first 50 kilometres of subsea fibre-optic cable was recently laid at the northern reach of the $45.4-million Connected Coast project that will hook up 139 rural remote communities, including 48 Indigenous communities, to high-speed internet.

Mosaic Forestry Management’s presentation encourages many questions from Cortes Islanders

Mosaic Forest Management provided a Cortes Island Activity Update Zoom meeting on January 27, 2022 about their proposed forestry activities in the next 3 years, starting this fall. Over forty participants relayed questions to the six Mosaic presenters, via the “chat” function of the online meeting platform. The entire presentation and question period lasted one hour and forty-five minutes.
