Will The Feds Intervene On Site C?

The controversial Site C Dam project was rejected twice (back in the 1980s and 90s), before Premier Christy Clark’s government decided to go over the heads of provincial agencies like the BC utilities Commission and Agricultural Land Commission. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government  issued the necessary permits to start construction during the last Federal election. As Treaty 8 gave local First Nations use of the land this project will submerge, it seems likely that a treaty is being broken. Despite all of this, BC Hydro began what many view as the environmental destruction of the Site C Peace River Valley. Since then a new Canadian government has been elected. They spoke of the need for social license and promised a new era of respect for indigenous peoples. Will The Feds Intervene On Site C?

McKenna Asks Canadians To Trust The Government

The first meeting of what Environment Minister Catherine McKenna calls our “pan-Canadian team on Climate Change” is now over.  She has been closeted with environmental ministers from the provinces and territories, McKenna called it “the most positive meeting that has taken place in a very long time. Though short on details,  the Minister said “We all know we have to act together”and alluded to “real opportunities” in the clean tech sector. To distill her message down to the three words which she did not actually use, McKenna asks Canadians to trust the Government

Canada Is Back In The Fight Against Climate Change

Catherine McKenna, Canada’s new Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, has already been  in Paris. She met with her international counterparts for three days to discuss key issues prior to the upcoming United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 21). Some of the most interesting comments came from the twitter feed. They started after McKenna tweeted, “Canada is back in the fight against Climate Change.”

It Is Time Canada Cleaned Up Its’ Emissions

Tom Mulcair just announced his plan “to restore Canada’s environmental credibility at home and around the world by putting a price on carbon, making polluters pay and taking meaningful steps to reduce carbon emissions.” Mulcair is right, it is time Canada cleaned up its’ emissions.

Canada Could Be A Clean Energy Superpower

The clean energy sector employs more people than the oil sands and  the workforce grew another 14% last year. According to Clean Energy Canada’s latest Tracking the Energy Revolution, this sector attracted almost twice the investors than the fishing, forestry and agriculture sectors combined. They did not mention the sources of this money, but last year’s report showed 4 of the top 5 investment firms were German or Japanese. Foreign nations recognize the potential that the Harper administration has failed to perceive.  Canada could be a clean energy superpower.
