BC’s first Ocean Plastic Depot

A 2014 study estimates there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the ocean. There is also a great deal of polystyrene. These are two of the most prevalent types of ocean debris washing up on our beaches. The Ocean Legacy Foundation decided to do something about it and partnered with the qathet Regional District to open up BC’s first Ocean Plastic Depot in Powell River.

Another Cortes Public Market opens Saturday

Though a number of vendors are advertising their goods on the Facebook page, Campbell River’s Pier Street Farmers Market & Artisan Fair might not open this year. The Quadra Farmer’s Market and Bazaar opted to become an online market directory. Cortes Island adopted a different approach and another Cortes public market opens Saturday.

this year’s participatory Grant-in-Aid process

The invitations were emailed on April 23, 2020 and an announcement was made at www.cortesisland.com for anyone who may have been missed. Cortes Island’s entire non profit sector, “especially those not applying for funds,” were invited to a participatory Grant-in-Aid process. Fourteen organizations were at the first ZOOM meeting; eight subsequently posted final applications. Each organization was instructed to choose a designated rep to vote on how the funding should be allocated. Cortes Island’s Alternate Director, Corry Dow, will present the results to the Electoral Areas Services Committee on Wednesday, June 19th.

Cortes Non Profits Participate in Grant-In-Aid Process

Cortes regional director, Noba Anderson, invited non-profits from Cortes Island to propose projects that qualify for the annual $25,000 grant-in-aid from Strathcona Regional District (SRD).

April 29th SRD Board Meeting: Decision To Go Public

The Strathcona Regional District is becoming more proficient at recording their meetings. Their second YouTube recording starts close to the very beginning of the meeting and is consequently twenty-one minutes longer. The most pertinent item at the April 29th meeting, for Cortes and Quadra residents, was the SRD board’s decision to go public.
