There are many causes of inflation, but there’s only one solution central banks seem willing to consider: increase interest rates. This has many people scratching their heads: Why would this bring down the price of rent, food or gas? Won’t it increase costs for anyone who pays interest on a variable-rate mortgage or consumer loan? And won’t it make essential green investments more difficult?

Rent and Food Push ‘Living Wage’ Up 17 Per Cent

The cost of life in British Columbia has risen at a record rate this year as runaway rent and food prices erode savings and squeeze wallets. 

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ 2022 Working for a Living Wage report  found two parents in Metro Vancouver would each need to make $24.08 an  hour to afford housing, food, child care and other expenses for a family  of four, up 17 per cent from $20.52 in 2021. The minimum wage in B.C.  is $15.65.

Canada’s Competition Bureau will study grocery chain pricing

Canada’s Competition Bureau is launching a study on the grocery store sector as food prices rise at the fastest rate in 40 years.

The announcement came after the NDP’s opposition day motion to tackle high food prices received unanimous support in the House of Commons. From now until June 2023, the bureau says it will examine how governments can combat grocery price increases through greater competition.

Food security is very important to Marc Doll, a candidate for Regional Director in Area C during the upcoming election.

“Climate change is here. Its effects are here and they’re getting worse. When it comes to our food production, the things that we’ve depended on for the last 40, 50, 60 years are just not there anymore,” he explained.

Egg prices to go up with climate disasters affecting feed supply

Egg prices are set for an uptick in the coming months owing to climate related disasters affecting production, says Daybreak Farms, northwest B.C.’s biggest egg producers.

Kieran Christison, manager of Daybreak Farms, said while the price will go up by 10 cents for a dozen eggs early next year, the price of eggs will continue to escalate owing to increased feed and packaging (egg carton) prices.

The increase follows two recent hikes of 14 cents and 7 cents. The cost of egg cartons went up 50 per cent, due to difficulty in procuring material like pulp to make these, she said.
