Mosaic Forestry Management’s presentation encourages many questions from Cortes Islanders

Mosaic Forest Management provided a Cortes Island Activity Update Zoom meeting on January 27, 2022 about their proposed forestry activities in the next 3 years, starting this fall. Over forty participants relayed questions to the six Mosaic presenters, via the “chat” function of the online meeting platform. The entire presentation and question period lasted one hour and forty-five minutes.

Mosaic hopes to start logging on Cortes this fall

Mosaic Forest Management is tentatively considering logging some of their Cortes Island holding after the wildfire season ends this year.  

The forestry giant laid out their draft three-year plan during a ZOOM call on Thursday night. A company spokesperson emphasized the idea this is very much a draft plan and they want to hear back from Cortes residents.

Community voices on proposed TELUS tower: Call for an open dialogue

A growing number of Cortes Island residents are pushing for a more involved community consultation regarding the latest TELUS cellular tower proposal on Tla’amin Nation land.

The 63.1-meter tower is currently a stand-alone proposal with a deadline of Jan. 31 for public feedback.

Public Meetings for two large Quadra Island developments deferred

How our local government works

Public meetings for two controversial Quadra Island real estate developments have been deferred until this April, 2022, because of concerns about meeting in-person during a pandemic. 

The public meeting for the proposed Gowland Harbour Views development was scheduled for January 18th, 2022, and the rezoning meeting for Quadra Links Golf Course was to have occurred the following day.

With less than a week to go, at the January 12th SRD Board meeting, Quadra Island Regional Director Jim Abram, said, “I have two items of business that are very timely. We need to deal with them today at this meeting because we have scheduled two public hearings in the next week.”

Coast communities riding out ferry service disruptions due to COVID-19 staffing crunch

After a recent rash of service disruptions due to wild weather, coastal communities relying on BC Ferries as an essential service are going to face more interruptions to their lifeline in the coming months. 

Absenteeism due to the Omicron variant, an ongoing labour shortage, and the impending loss of staff who oppose the company’s vaccination mandate are likely to lead to additional service disruptions, particularly on the smaller inter-island routes, said BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall on Monday.
