Director’s Report: gratitude, grants-in-aid, & wharves

From the desk of Regional Director Robyn Mawhinney

Festive greetings! I’m sending you wishes for warmth and joy during this season of long dark nights, and I hope you enjoy some quality time with those who are dear to you.

Gratitude to volunteers
It’s wonderful what an engaged and involved community ours is. Shoutout of gratitude to the many many islanders volunteering across the islands, building community. During 2024 I’ve had a chance to work with a spectrum of volunteers and I’m so grateful for everyone’s dedication.

Quadra Island Organizations Explore Possibilities For Working Together

Representatives from at least 56 Quadra Island organizations came together at the Quadra Community Centre on Saturday, February 24. Close to 30 more were invited. Jennifer Banks-Doll, who facilitated the meeting, estimates there were about 80 attendees. They were asked two questions:

As none of the directors had anything they wished to say, this segment is almost like a drum roll: “Discussion: All in favour? Opposed? Seeing none the motion is carried.”

Quadra Island Festival of Chamber Music

Quadra Island has a world class Festival of Chamber Music. The festival’s Co-founder and Artistic Director, Phillip Hansen, is currently the principal cellist with the Orquestra Filarmonica de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and has been featured in concert halls throughout Europe, the Far East and Americas. The other musician’s resumes are just as impressive. Glancing through them, I found myself continually exclaiming in disbelief, “On Quadra Island!” According to Catherine Smith, President of the Quadra Island Chamber Music Society, our rural lifestyle is part of the appeal that draws talent of this calibre. The Quadra Island Festival of Chamber Music could also be a poster child for grants-in-aid.
